Welcome to Save of the Month! where each month we recognize a resident who went above and beyond to make a great save in the ED. Nominations are solicited from the faculty each block and we pick one resident for recognition and embarrassment on this blog.

This edition’s Save of the Month goes to. . . Dr. Richard Shin!

Here’s the story:

Richard Shin diagnosed aortic dissection in a young 39 year old patient with back pain and hypertension. This was a kind of patient that I would have sent home with motrin had I seen him myself. But Richard decided to ultrasound his aorta and saw a flap and confirmed it with the ultrasound team. The patient ended up being admitted to the ICU for evaluation (could not be scanned because his creatinine had gone up to 4). I believe this deserves a “save of the month” honor.

Great job Dr. Shin!
