In the last month, you have seen more death than most of us saw in our four years of residency. I am amazed that you still come to work with a smile. I am amazed by your drive to want to do more for our community. I want to tell you that you are brave, kind and strong for showing up to work with such a desire to help, despite the adversity.
I cannot imagine myself in your shoes. As an intern, the primary instinct is to survive. Now you are taking care of very sick people, and sometimes we can’t be by your side helping you. Just because you are giving your all to the patients, I admire you. When I feel broken in CCT, I look to my side and there’s my intern, giving all their soul. You are an essential part of the team, at least in my team. You are fundamental.
Be resilient among the chaos. Excuse us because sometimes in this unprecedented situation, we don’t take time to teach you. We lose our coolness and in the middle of all the pandemonium, we forget how hard it is to be a junior. It’s pretty scary. The sense of responsibility is overwhelming, but we are here for you.
A little secret. We are also afraid. We also cry at the end of our shift. We also have nightmares. We sometimes believe that we are not doing our best. We feel overpowered.
You are a hero not because you are working at the epicenter of the storm, but because you are doing it with grace, innovation, and fearlessness.
As a collective, my class appreciates and admires your huge effort. We are here for you. Please don’t doubt it.
With love,
Carolina Camacho PGY-4
